Having an "Old-Fashioned" Holiday
People often grow nostalgic for an "old-fashioned" holiday experience, one they've never had themselves but have heard of in songs or seen in old movies. Everyone seemed to enjoy their celebrations a lot more "way back when", and 21st-century Americans are spending more and more time and money, vainly trying to recapture that atmosphere. How can you succeed in having an old-fashioned time in this postmodern world?
Stop and Smell the Snowflakes
It may not be practical to dash through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh, but you can catch a glimpse of that carefree winter ritual if you concentrate on appreciating each moment as it comes rather than stressing about the past or the future. Part of the fun of that sleigh ride was relishing the journey, not stewing over something that happened beforehand or worrying over what might occur when the riders got to their destination. If you're traveling, perhaps you could make a point of seeking out the scenic route or at least soaking up the festive glow of lights on the many buildings you're passing.
Baked or Bought, Enjoy the Taste
Some of us are able to make our own decorations or bake our own holiday treats. If you're one of those people, savor the knowledge that you're following in the footsteps of past generations. If you don't have that kind of time or talent, instead of resenting your store-bought items be glad you're able to purchase them. Gratitude is a great old-fashioned virtue…and remember, our ancestors made their trimmings from scratch because they had no choice!
Nurture Your Whole Self
The core of HOOAH 4 HEALTH is its commitment to the whole person. As you move through your holiday-rich environment, remember to nourish your body, mind, and spirit. Play in the snow before you shovel the walk. Try to guess, by its size, shape, and weight, what that wrapped gift box contains. Participate in religious services at your house of worship or at home with your Family.
Above all, remember that the holidays are meant to refresh you, not to beat you down. If you let them work their magic, you may discover that the "old-fashioned" experience you were craving is within your reach.
