Use Conflict Management Skills

Conflict is a natural part of life. It might be caused by gossip, jealousy, prejudice, misunderstanding, etc. Learn to control your temper and resolve conflicts in a peaceful way--and help others do the same.

  • Calm down; take a "time out."

  • When you are ready to talk, describe what has upset you (the problem), then listen while the other person does the same.

  • Together, brainstorm all the possible solutions--write them down. Carefully consider each of the possible solutions and their consequences.

  • Choose the best solution and then put it into action.

Another method is mediation -- when an objective third party helps resolve a conflict. Learn about student mediation at your school, or ask about starting a program if there isn't one.
